FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What does a Driver's Edge class consist of? Upon arrival, participants are given a twenty question "pre-test" that allows us to collectively gauge their knowledge of driving before we begin the program. Driver’s Edge starts in a classroom setting with an opening talk, program overview and introduction of the instructors. Parents are strongly encouraged to sit in on the talk, and preferably, stay for the remainder of the class. Students are then placed in cars with professional race-car drivers (vehicles provided), where they will experience hands-on training. Exercises include skid control, ABS braking, evasive lane changing and combating unexpected situations. Who can take Driver's Edge? Students must be 21 years of age, or younger, and MUST have a valid driver's license or learner's permit by the date of the event. There is no required driving time a student must have before taking our program, but we do ask that the student has some driving experience before taking Driver’s Edge. We do NOT want a student taking Driver’s Edge if it is their first time driving. Our class teaches some advanced driving techniques and students must feel relatively comfortable behind-the-wheel in order to get the most out of the class. How long is the class? Driver's Edge generally runs about 4 ½ hours. Do I need to be registered in order to participate in Driver’s Edge? Yes. Registration can be done online at our website by clicking on the “Tour Dates & Registration” link. Once I register, when and how will I receive information about the class I signed up for? We send class details and directions to the program site via e-mail 10-14 days PRIOR to the program date. It is very important that you watch for this e-mail, as we do require you to respond to confirm the student’s attendance in the class. If we do not hear back from you within the time allowed, we may remove the student from the class and offer their space to someone from the waiting list. Students without an e-mail address will be called about 7-10 days before the program date. How do I know if my registration was accepted? If the class you want is full, the website will NOT allow you to register for the class. Once you are linked to the registration page (where you are asked to fill out the student’s information), that means the class is available and you are able to register the student at that time. You’ll know that your registration is accepted when a page comes up saying, “Your registration has been ACCEPTED and CONFIRMED in our database” after you complete the registration form and click the “sign me up!” button at the bottom of the page. If you click “sign me up!” and an error page comes up or it says, “page cannot be displayed”, your registration was NOT accepted. This usually means that you didn’t complete a field(s) on the registration page correctly. For example, the age field can not hold more than two digits. Do not put 15 ½ or 16 ¾ for the age. The date of birth field must be in the following format: xx/xx/xxxx. If you have done everything correctly in filling out the registration page and an error page continues to come up, please contact our office by phone or e-mail. How much does Driver’s Edge cost? The value of the Driver's Edge class is approximately $450 per person. However, Driver's Edge is a non-profit organization and there is NO COST for this program due to our terrific supporters and constant fundraising efforts. Donations are always welcome and greatly appreciated. How can I make a donation? Driver's Edge will gladly accept any and all donations. You can make an on-line donation by simply clicking the “donate now” link. In addition, monetary donations may be made in person at any Driver's Edge program. Donations may also be mailed to the Driver's Edge office. Driver's Edge is a 501-(c)3 non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. A variety of donations of goods and services are also always needed. If you have something that you would like to offer to help our program, please contact our office. Do you give my e-mail out to anyone? No. Providing your email address to us is very important. E-mail is our primary way to contact students, as we have thousands of attendees. Students that are registered for an event receive very important class details and directions via e-mail. We also follow-up with students every 12, and 24 months via e-mail. If we are missing any registration information or have a question about the student’s participation we may also e-mail you. Again, we do NOT give your e-mail address out to any third parties and it will NOT be used for any marketing purposes. What if I do not have an e-mail address to give you? It is okay if you do not have an e-mail address to provide. Although, email is the best and easiest way for us to get in touch with you, students without email addresses will be phoned. What if I don’t receive your e-mails? We have no control of who actually receives and/or opens our e-mails, but we recommend that you add our e-mail addresses to your address book so that your e-mail system does not filter out incoming e-mails to your junk or SPAM folder. E-mails will come to you from either Tracy@driversedge.org or Info@driversedge.org and will include “Driver’s Edge” on the subject line. If a student is registered or has previously taken Driver’s Edge, we ask that you please keep an eye out for e-mails from us. If my e-mail address or other contact information changes, should I notify you? As you can imagine, with having so many students complete our program throughout the years, we get a large number of returned e-mails and disconnected phone numbers as people move and/or change their contact information. To reduce the number of returned e-mails and difficulty getting in touch with prior attendees, it is very helpful if you contact us with your new e-mail address and/or other contact information (regardless of how long ago the student took Driver’s Edge). However, we do ask that you give us the STUDENT’S FIRST & LAST NAME with your new e-mail address or other contact information so that we can easily look up the student’s registration in our database. Do You Need Volunteers? Volunteers are always needed to assist with our programs in the local communities. Volunteering can range from being an “errand runner” at an event, picking up cones on the driving course, registration and paperwork, or simply being available through the duration of a program should something come up and we need a hand. If you are interested, please contact our office. Do parents have to attend? We STRONGLY encourage parents to stay for the program and observe. If the parent or guardian cannot attend with a minor, please make sure that all paperwork needed for the minor has been completed, as the student will need to bring the signed paperwork to the program. Do I sign up for two days or only one? Students need to register for ONE class only on ONE day only, either morning or afternoon. Select cities may have two dates available to choose from, but this does not mean it is a two-day class. Do I need to arrive early? No. We recommend arriving between 7:45a.m. - 8:00a.m. for the morning session and 12:45 - 1:00p.m. for the afternoon session. How do I change my class time, date, or city? Do not re-register. Simply call our office and let us know which class the student is currently enrolled in and which class you would like us to switch them to. Please DO NOT register a student in more than one class without having us cancel or switch them from the class they will not be attending. How do I cancel? Call or e-mail us to let us know you will be unable to attend. Many of our classes have waiting lists, so the earlier you can inform us, the better chance we have of allowing someone else to fill that spot. Who needs a LVMS Minor Waiver? The Las Vegas Motor Speedway Minor Waiver is REQUIRED for all students participating in a Las Vegas program who are under the age of 18 (at the time of class). It is similar to the Driver’s Edge Parental Consent form, but the Las Vegas Motor Speedway requires this form in addition to our required Parental Consent Form. Las Vegas students must make sure to turn in BOTH of these forms, which can be downloaded from our registration page. Where do I get the LVMS Minor Waiver? You can download the LVMS Minor Waiver from our registration page. You must have Adobe Reader to open the LVMS Minor Waiver. If you cannot download the form, call our office and we will e-mail, fax, or mail a waiver to you. How do I fill out the LVMS Minor Waiver?
Who needs a Parental Consent Form? All students under the age of 18 (at the time of the class) need to have a parental consent form signed by a parent or guardian for any Driver’s Edge event. Where do I get the Parental Consent Form? You can download the Parental Consent Form from our registration page. You must have Adobe Reader to open the Parental Consent Form. If you cannot download the form, call our office and we will e-mail, fax, or mail a consent form to you. What do I do with the LVMS Minor Waiver or Parental Consent form once I have filled it out? We recommend mailing or bringing the forms the day of the event and presenting them at check-in. You may fax, mail, or bring the Parental Consent form. You may only mail or bring the LVMS Minor Waiver (the Speedway will not accept faxed copies). We request that students mail or bring the ORIGINAL forms with them to the class, in addition to faxing. Only students participating in the Las Vegas program will need to turn in the LVMS Minor Waiver AND the Parental Consent Form, but all students need to turn in the Parental Consent form if under age 18. Students will NOT be permitted to participate if we do not receive the required paperwork. Should I turn in a Parental Consent form or LVMS Minor Waiver before I am actually registered or if I am on a waiting list or the notification list? No, please do not turn in any forms until you are actually REGISTERED in a specific class, date and time. Turning in a form before registering or being on a waiting list does NOT speed up the process of getting into a class. Does Driver's Edge count toward any credits or points for the DMV or Driver's Education? Unfortunately, Driver's Edge is offered as an additional class to teach teens defensive driving techniques and does not count for hours or points for the DMV or driver's education. Do I get a discount from my insurance for taking this class? Each student will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the class. You may present this certificate to your insurance company for a possible insurance discount. Driver's Edge makes no promises. It depends on your insurance agent, carrier and the policy you have. What do I need to bring and wear to the program? 1. Student’s valid driver's license or learner's permit 2. Signed Parental Consent Form (if under 18), if you didn’t already submit one to us. 3. Las Vegas Motor Speedway Minor Waiver (if under 18, Las Vegas students only), if you didn’t already submit one to us. 4. Students must wear shoes that will stay on their feet, preferably sneakers/tennis-shoes (no high heels or flip flops) 5. Sunscreen, jacket, umbrella, hat (dress for the weather) I tried to register for a class, but the class is full, what should I do? If the class you would like to register for is full, you will be directed to the waiting list. We strongly encourage you to register on our waiting list. If spaces become available, we will contact you to let you know we are able to accommodate you in the program. However, since most of these spaces come available at the last minute, wait listed students may be contacted as late as a day or two before the program date. What is the notification list? The notification list is simply a place that you can add your name and contact information to be notified about any future date(s) in your area. You will have the option of selecting specific cities for which you would like notification. What is the difference between the notification list and the waiting list? The notification list is a request to be notified about future date(s) in the city or cities you choose. We will e-mail you as soon as we have a date available. The waiting list is for a specific city and date. The waiting list link will only appear if the class you are trying to register for is full. If your name is on the waiting list, we will contact you if a space becomes available in the specific class for which you were trying to register. Does the notification list automatically register me in a class? No, the notification list is simply used to gather students’ contact information so we may notify you when have a date(s) scheduled in the city or cities you are interested in. It is your responsibility to return to our website to officially register the student. It is first come, first served. Please make sure to sign up right away once you receive notification of a program date. Does the waiting list automatically register me in a class? As spaces become available in a specific class, we go down the waiting list and contact students. We will ask you whether or not the student can attend in a timely manner. You will be given the option if there is more than one class time available. Once you respond that the student can attend, we will automatically transfer the student into the class. Once you have confirmed that the student can attend, we will send you an email with all class details and directions. Can a student re-take Driver’s Edge? Yes, students may take Driver’s Edge again, as long as they are registered. When filling out the registration form, you will be asked if you have taken Driver’s Edge before. Please be honest if you have already taken our course, regardless of how long ago it was. We want to accommodate as many students as possible in an event. It is very unlikely, but if we have a very long waiting list for a class that you are registered for and you are a prior attendee, we may ask you to withdraw from the class, in order to accommodate a new student. |
